I am trying to workaround the vert limit in Source by splitting a model into pieces and having the model reference the parts as one model. Does Wall Worm have a feature for doing this?

Yes, you can do this.

There is a bug if you don't do it correctly, so make sure to follow these steps:

  • Create a WWMT Helper for the main node/geometry
  • Create another WWMT Helper for different parts (as many as you want models)
  • Select in the viewport the WWMT Helper of the main WWMT
  • Switch to the Modify Tab
  • Scroll down to the very bottom rollout which is Models, Attachments & Bones
  • For each extra MDL, click the Pick button under the WWMTs as $model button
  • Export root WWMT now

At this point each WWMT (including the root) will export it's own SMD as a $model in the QC.

Note that if you pick a scene node instead of a WWMT object, there will be a  MAXScript error. So make sure you only add WWMT Helpers to the list.
