If you experience a problem with the viewport freezing in Max 2017/2018, please read this known issue about Max's viewport freeze (http://dev.wallworm.com/document/226/max_viewport_hangsfreezes_in_max_2017.html).
Too early to say, but there is promising information that the culprit is Geforce Experience. If you have this problem and have Geforce Experience installed, try uninstalling it. If it works or doesn't, please share your results here.
Turns out this was a dead end. Freezing still happens.
If you get this error, please submit a Bug Report to Autodesk (http://download.autodesk.com/us/support/report_a_bug.html?SelProduct=3dsMax).
This bug was fixed with a driver update to Nvidia card.
