Wall Worm News / Wall Worm Model Tools 1.0 Released
March 30, 2011, 01:35:15 PM
Wall Worm Model Tools is now out of Beta with version 1.0.

See the full changelog here: http://wallworm.com/projects/utilities/docs/resources/changelog.html

There are features in this version that won't work yet until Wunderboy's SMD Exporter 1.6 is available (like the ability to export CAT rigs).

Wall Worm Sky Writer / Sky Writer 0.2 Released
March 15, 2011, 09:03:25 PM
Version 0.2 (2011-03-15)

• Fixed default gamma to be set to the value of the Gamma spinner. Previously, the gamma was incorrectly set to 2.2 unless you had changed the value of the gamma spinner.
• Added half-sized (horizontal 2:1) images to file output list. Can be manually swapped out with current 1:1 images by renaming and running compile. Named same as corresponding side but suffixed with "_half".
• Added 4x4 pixel copy of Down image that can be used for the down image by swapping/renaming to the down texture name and recompiling. Named same as the down image but suffixed with "_tiny".

The second two items will eventually be integrated into the Sky Writer UI with the currently disabled buttons for 1/2 and Tiny. To use right now, you can rename the current images for these to something else and then remove the "_half" and "_tiny" from the sides and/or bottom alternative images--then recompile.  If you don't understand the purpose... forgive me... I'll add more docs on how to do this later as well as why you may want to do this.

Wall Worm News / WWMT Beta Soon Coming to an End
March 13, 2011, 12:32:07 PM
WWMT is nearing the end of Beta. I've been testing Wunderboy's new SMD Exporter which will be available soon. When that is out, I'll release WWMT 1.0. Things to expect:

A couple new controls in the settings floater and an update to adding WWMT to the menu that is compatible with Sky Writer (right now, if you install the Sky Writer menu then try to install WWMT, it will fail).

With the new update you will be able to use CAT for your rigs! (Until now you couldn't because the CAT rigs would export as geometry instead of just bones). That problem is resolved with the new Wunderboy exporter!

The ability to use CAT is something I have mixed feelings about. I really love CAT (in theory) except that I've had a lot of problems with the CATMotion panel freezing Max. Some of my feelings (shared by others) is documented in this Short Story About CAT.

Anyway, I'll be testing more over the next couple of weeks. The release should be sometime soon.

Hopefully Max 2012 (coming out in a few weeks) will resolve this problem. The flexibility and simplicity of CAT makes it an ideal tool for making animations.

Something that I've wanted for a long time is a tool to create displacements for Source inside 3ds Max. I've now officially started this project.

There are going to be two separate tools:

  • Simple Displacement Tool
  • Advanced Displacement Tool

I will release the Simple Displacement tool first. As the name suggests, it won't be too complex.

The advanced tool will be more complex; depending on how it goes, I hope to have this tool ready later in 2011 and it may potentially be integrated with Convexity. Don't worry, by the time I release this, there will probably be a free version of Convexity out for those of you leery about purchasing a plugin. Still... I strongly encourage all of you who use my tools to look at Convexity--it is one of my favorite plugins. I personally want more people to support Convexity so that its developer is encouraged to keep developing it!

Wall Worm Sky Writer / Sky Writer Updates to 0.12
March 10, 2011, 04:39:54 PM
There are some updates to Sky Writer. The tool is now at Version 0.12 which has the following changes:

Version 0.12 (2011-03-10)
•Added Gamma Spinner to control output gamma of rendered bitmaps
•Added some error checking to alleviate a few uncaught exceptions
•No longer opens the material editor upon render
•Fixed bug when picking existing Sky Writer Helper that had a resolution of 4096 (though in reality... that resolution is WAY OVERKILL in current engine)

The gamma change is important. The gamma spinner defaults to 1.0 with new sky helpers unless the Exposure Control is set to mr Photographic Exposure Control... in which case it defaults to 2.2.

Wall Worm News / Version 0.999 Released
March 07, 2011, 09:35:37 AM
I've released version 0.999. The main change is that the tool now has a new setting for the Game Info Directory in the settings floater. This is essential to be able to compile models and textures for Left 4 Dead. It isn't required for games like CS:S, HL2.

WIP Levels / de_sacrilege
March 05, 2011, 09:43:58 AM
I've been remaking the most popular CS 1.6 map I made (which, embarassingly, had a misspelled name) called de_sacrelige. This update for Source is properly named de_sacrilege.

Here are a couple screen shots of it in Max. Yes, I'm building the level inside 3ds Max instead of Hammer, thanks to an awesome plugin called Convexity (click the Maple 3d icon at the bottom of every page to learn more about it).

Making this map is what led me to start building the Wall Worm Model Tools. I had previously only finished one Source map (de_tension) that was really just a learning experience for getting used to Source tools. Tension was the first map of mine to have models... and making the models was so tedious that when I got ready to do them for Sacilege... I lost all enthusiasm. As there are dozens of models on my list for this map... it sat and collected dust on my hard-drive for months.

Finally I decided to learn some MAXScript... and voila!

Anyway, it's still not done because everytime I start working on a new model, I now keep saying that I should add this or that new feature to WWMT to make it easier.

It's also because of this that I've started a Sky Texture Exporter called Sky Writer. I should have a public beta of that in a week...

For those interested in Convexity... here is a short review I wrote about it a few months back.

[EDIT] Fast forward to 2014 and Convexity is dead. But if reading for the first time, fret not. Wall Worm now exports VMFs all by itself :)

Wall Worm News / WWMT 0.998 Released
March 02, 2011, 07:02:36 PM
Version 0.998 is now out. The feature list follows:

•Fixed Pick LOD1 Bug that would pop up when picking a model and you had previously set the Lod List Length in the Settings floater to 0.
•Fixed LOD List Length spinner range so it does not include 0.
•Added new buttons to the Model & Basic QC rollout to open the model and material output folders in explorer.
•Updated the Settings floater to not let you pick an SMD Exporter that isn't currently installed.
•Added new button to Settings floater to add a Wall Worm item to the Max Main Menu with a sub-menu for Wall Worm Model Tools.
•Added support for Wunderboy's upcoming SMD Exporter update.
•Created a new install script that has users first choose settings for WWMT before running.

Note that this version now supports Wunderboy's new SMD Exporter... but that exporter is not yet available. I will keep you posted when it's released.

Using WWMT / MOVED: Error Loading Model

Bug Reports / Error Loading Model
March 02, 2011, 10:59:04 AM
This isn't really a WWMT error... but it is worth noting here. I was testing WWMT across two different computers and kept finding that a model would work fine on computer but not the next. The second computer would compile... but when I tried to load the model in Half-Life Model Viewer, I kept getting this error:

Error Loading Model

It turns out that this happened because Steam had done an update and reset my Source SDK Engine to Source 2006... which is not the target engine my model was compiled for (Source 2009).

So when you get this error, restart Source SDK and make sure that SDK is set to the right engine. See if the model will load in HLMV now. If not, recompile the model and then try viewing it.

When you pick a model and see this message:

QuoteUnknown property: "pickLOD1" in Rollout:wwmt_lodslistrollouta

This bug is caused by having an invalid number in the LOD List Length of the WWMT settings. The WWMT settings should force you to pick a number from 1-10 but it lets you pick 0. If you select 0... you will have this error when picking a model.

When looking at the MAXScript listener, you will also see this error in red:

Quote-- Error occurred in addModel.picked(); filename: W:\MAXScript\WallWorm.com\WallWormModelTools\wallworm_model_tools.ms; position: 20975; line: 620

I will address this bug in the next release.

To stop this from happening before I've added the fix, simple change the LOD List Length setting in the Settings Floater. You can access that by clicking the settings button at the bottom of WWMT.

NOTE: To take effect, you may need to close WWMT and reopen it after you change the setting.

Wall Worm News / Roadblock
February 28, 2011, 07:10:02 PM
I've reached a roadblock in the development of WWMT. Wunderboy has provided me a pre-release of his new SMD Exporter update. It is designed to be easier for programs like WWMT to use. Unfortunately, I am having problems getting it to integrate properly. It may well be my own limitations in MAXScript (I only really started learning it a few months ago). Or it may be a bug in MAXScript or the SMDExporter.

In any event, I'm trying to figure this out. This issue is consuming the majority of my attention... so if you happen to know anything about MAXScript and plugins, feel free to give some input and help me solve the dilemma.

And if you can't help with that, make sure to visit Wunderboy and thank him for his efforts!

Bug Reports / 0.996 Gibs Fadetime Error in Gibs
February 25, 2011, 03:56:57 PM
Changing the fadetime on the Gibs rollout causes an error. I've got a fix for this but it isn't online yet since I am currently testing Wunderboy's new SMD Exporter.

Wall Worm News / WWMT 0.996 Released
February 24, 2011, 06:49:51 PM
Version 0.996 is here. The main new feature is Custom Gibs support. I haven't done the docs for it yet... so use at your own risk of frustration (there is no error checking... and some settings are required for various other settings to work). See the Valve Developer Community for more info on what the settings might do. I'll hopefully have docs in a week.

I've also updated the Compile Errors page to explain some more problems you can run into.

Bug Reports / Export Bug - ALL VERSIONS through 0.995
February 24, 2011, 04:12:20 PM
I have discovered a bug in the exporter that makes the export fail when you have the Selection Lock Toggle set in the Max UI. When that button is set (also set via Max Spacebar), only the currently selected item in the Max viewport will get exported (even if it isn't a part of the model).

I have fixed this in the 0.996 (which I haven't loaded yet since I am still testing it). I may load it tonight.

PS. I discovered this since my three-year-old son kept hitting keys while I was working!  ::)
