Bug Reports / 0.995 Prop Data bugs
February 24, 2011, 11:13:16 AM
I know of a few errors in the Prop Data output... at the moment the Physics Mode and Damage Modifiers are incorrect.

I already have a fix for this as well as the Custom Gibs support. But I'm still testing it... I may have it loaded tonight. If not, look for it through the weekend.

Wall Worm News / WWMT 0.995 Released
February 22, 2011, 09:13:36 PM
Version 0.995 is now out. It adds the Prop Data and Custom Gibs Rollout. As of now you can set all the standard prop_data fields. I will be adding custom gibs support shortly. See the changelog for a list of additions.

I have not yet added any docs to this rollout. I also have not done extensive testing on it... and almost no error checking. Feedback is appreciated.

Wall Worm News / Custom Gibs Coming Soon
February 22, 2011, 10:38:30 AM
One of the most common emails I've gotten is the request for Custom Gibs. I have looked into what it will take to make custom gibs part of WWMT. I think I'll be able to add that soon.

Model WIPs / Wall Worm Fred
February 22, 2011, 01:01:13 AM
Here are a couple screen shots of Fred... or what's left of him. No one is really certain what his real name was back on his home world... but he's never argued with being called Fred... especially after the disection.

I'm working on this model for a Hidden: Source map I've got in my mind. I may also use it in a CS Map meant to just show off some work made in Convexity, 3ds Max and Wall Worm Model Tools.

Fred in low poly inside 3ds Max

Fred in high poly inside Mudbox getting detail and textures

I'll add more screen shots as I get further with Fred.

Wall Worm News / WWMT 0.994 Released
February 21, 2011, 10:44:05 AM
I added yet another update. I must be addicted to updating this tool.

I was making multiple skins for a model and again realized this should just be a part of WWMT. So now as of Version 0.994, WWMT handles exporting multiple skins.

I also added a couple new settings in the lighting rollout as well as duplicated a couple functions into the primary Model rollout (exporting textures and assigning/picking the $illumposition helper).

Also, Jed has provided me with a version of his upcoming update to his SMD Exporter. I've tested it and it is working fine. I'll keep you posted.

Using WWMT / Fix incorrect rotation on Collision Hull
February 19, 2011, 01:02:12 PM
Here is a video demonstrating how to fix incorrect rotations on collision models.

Essentially, this usually happens when you use the main SMD as the $collisionmodel. What you need to do is to make sure your static prop has one bone that is also skinned to the model.

Using WWMT / Exporting Your First Prop in 2 clicks
February 19, 2011, 12:56:55 PM
I've uploaded a new video on exporting a prop in two (yes, 2) clicks! Note to do this you must have already set up a Default Model Path and Default Material Path in the WWMT Settings. This is using Version 0.993.

The official info this is at:

http://wallworm.com/projects/utilities/docs/using/export_static_prop.html

The Model Path and Material Path are not being saved when they were set from the Default Material and Model Paths in the Settings. I'll fix this today.

Bug Reports / Bug Report Guidelines
February 18, 2011, 09:06:02 AM
When submitting a bug report, please help everyone out a little by following these guidelines.

  • Make sure you are using the latest version first (see the official changelog); if not, please download the latest version and see if the bug persists.
  • Place the version number as the first item in your subject line.
  • State the OS (Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7).
  • Describe first what you intended to do; then the steps you took to generate the error/bug; then describe the outcome (what makes this a bug).
  • When possible, provide a screen shot of the errors.
  • If possible, attach a zip file with your Max file and the generated QC & SMDs. If the filesize is over 250kb, please save it on your own server and link to it.

By following these guidelines, you make it easier on everyone to find a solution and improve on WWMT and the community's understanding of how to use it.

WWMT Feature Requests / Request Guidelines
February 17, 2011, 12:57:16 PM
I am always happy for requests and ideas. At the same time, to save any time from being wasted, I do have a few guidelines for submitting feature requests:

  • Only ask if it relates to 3ds Max & Source... I don't use other apps
  • Before asking, make sure to have the latest version of WWMT

The Default Model Path and Default Material Path added to the Settings Floater in V 0.992 do not take effect until after WWMT is restarted. It still works... just not until you close WWMT and then reopen it. It will be fixed in the next release.

Wall Worm News / WWMT 0.992 Released
February 16, 2011, 04:55:26 PM
I was recording new videos this morning to document the features of WWMT when I decided there was one more bit of optimization to add: you can now set a default model path and a default material path in the settings floater. When set, new models get these values preset in their respective fields. What it means is that, if set, you can export a model in two clicks--Pick the Model then click the Run Export button.

Additionally, with the Auto Hull that was added in version 0.991, you can now get a staticprop with a collision hull in four clicks.

Wall Worm Sky Writer / Sky Writer
February 15, 2011, 11:28:32 PM
Sky Writer is the new tool I'm working on now that Wall Worm Model Tools is winding down. I don't expect it to take as long or go through as many iterations and updates as WWMT.

What does Sky Writer do?

  • Render Cubemaps
  • Compile cubemaps into VMTs and VTFs

Simple enough, aye? But handy if you like pretty maps!

Good question!

By all accounts (and by all, I'm refering to mine) a Wall Worm is good on a cracker. This assertion has been tentatively confirmed by Brian Atherton. Since that definition is likely not very satisfying to most people, here is a little history.

One day as a teenager I was preparing to leave Brett's appartment. Brett was a childhood friend and the brother of the previously introduced Brian Atherton. Brett and I were preparing to trek up to Westland Mall (a nearby shopping center popular with teenagers who wanted to act like they were there to buy expensive basketball shoes but were in reality there to scope out females).

Just as we were about to leave, Brett's dad boomed out in an ominous and overly dramatic slur something that changed the course of history.* See, Brett's dad was well known for stumbling, shuffling, spiritous imbibing and general swings from indifference to grouchiness. I'm not sure what mood he was in, but I remember him sitting up with intended authority; his eyes were wide in his gaunt face... and he pointed a finger at our general direction.

"Damn kids gunna get yerselfs killed!" he said. I think he was talking to us... but maybe to the ancestors... I wasn't sure. Brett and I turned to leave.

From behind came those ominous words: "Better watch out for those damn wall worms."

And that is the origin of the term.

Anyway... the internet age has come upon us... and I've found that this nifty phrase has caused uneasiness. Firewalls help protect against worms... so some people think that it must be some kind of virus! Now with Facebook and the term Wall monopolized for something we all "own"... it evokes fears of Boob spam.

In any event, Wall Worm doesn't have anything to do with that stuff. It's just a crazy rant I heard as a kid and thought it was unique.

Wall Worm News / Version 0.991 Released
February 15, 2011, 11:08:06 PM
Today I released version 0.991. I expect it to be the last beta version of WWMT. See the Changelog for a complete list of updates.

When Jed releases the next version of his SMD Exporter with MAXScript support, I will bring WWMT out of beta at version 1.

Wall Worm Model Tools / Wall Worm Model Tool Forums
February 15, 2011, 08:23:23 PM
I've started this forum because it's becoming hard for me to keep up with all the forums where I've been updating news on the Wall Worm Model Tools. I also don't want to burden other sites with updates every time I make an update to my tools for fear of it becoming wearisome. By doing it here... it is limited to people actually interested in the work going on at Wall Worm.

What you'll find here is news on the development of Wall Worm projects like the Wall Worm Model Tools and related apps for 3ds Max and the Source Game Engine. It may take me a little time to get content on here... but once I do I'll open the forums for WWMT users to share feedback.
