Great work Heathen!

This looks wonderful. Shawn's tools are incredibly helpful to the point that I am glad that I am spoiled enough that I do not need to deal with or face the long and tedious struggle of manually building and import/ exporting models. I would probably have told Olson to shove his 3d aspirations for me up his ********. No doubt.

I will hopefully be posting a few re models of my own here in the next few weeks/ months as time permits.

Keep up the good work and PLEASE!!!!!, keep posting as you can.

WIP Levels / Re: de_sacrilege
March 05, 2013, 01:36:15 PM
Well… time for an update on my end. I played through a full round of de_sacrilege v. 4005638980-B, this morning w/ bots and have a slightly new outlook on the map. My initial response was based off of what I could see in the screen shots which in the long run did very little to offer a good perspective of what the map looks like. Had I seen the overlay that shows up at the beginning of the launch of this level, I would have had a very different idea.

I played from the CT side and not the T (will remedy that tomorrow morning), and therefore I have a one sided view. Seeing the T’s who are shooting at you with extreme prejudice is about as hard as finding proof of Horatio Pump’s claim of manhood. These guys were all but invisible you could see tracer round trails but not them in some of the foliage. I will have to experiment and take notes to verify where these areas of concern are for certain but it seems currently that the T’s have an advantage there in that small regard.

Now, I think that the heavy cover advantage is possibly offset by the fact the CT team starts within spitting distance of the bombsites. They are easy to camp (ask Der or Nightwing, I am sure) and defend. As long as you don’t hang your head out for Vash to say hello with the SSG 3000 (or whatever Valve decided to name it), then you should be fine and have a very good chance of maintaining the high ground.

The map is a bit darker than I think I would like but it also adds to the mysteriousness and fun. It’s not quite dark enough to warrant a bunch of night-vision hooligans running about, but enough to create and maintain some nice shadows.

The layout is just like I remember with a few added paths to create more movement options and to be far less confining. Over all I give it a solid B+ and am only waiting for the final version to be released sometime in early 2049.

The Dingo has spoken, let him hath an ear, hear what the Lippy one speaketh.

First this excuse for a homo sapiens trys to pick up his mapping skills when he realizes that his better has joined the mapping world. What happens? He attempts a map that could have been fun had it been designed by someone like Brightfeller. But it was designed by Pump so, alas, it wasn't even packed right... sad.

Now, we see him following the great and formidable Dingo again and copying me on my choice of gaming computer boutiques. Four years ago I ordered my first system from these guys and my new system arrives on Tuesday and I hear that Horatio is hoping to make up for his below par skills by purchasing a computer from the same guys.

Well my friend, you can go out and buy a Chey-Tac .308 and it won't help you shoot like Chris Kyle (God rest his soul and bless his family), buying a better computer won't help you build better maps either. Some people have talent other don't. You can tell which is which by who is doing the following!

Along with your dreams of being the first bald and freckled transvestite in space? And who can forget your desire to achieve fame as a breeder of naked mole rats (take that however you wish)?
So many dreams, all down the drain.

Oh well….

I would like to assume that everyone interested would have by this point viewed at least one if not many of your online tutorials. Though I will not make that assumption as I know what happens when that kind of empty guesswork is applied. So that being said, I would like to suggest a free none paid beginners class for the first one.

Obviously the first place would be to start at the beginning with a brief overview of Max. Show the set up and the optimal usage for Source based application. I would go over briefly the different toolbars and command windows within Max and then go over the windows we will be dealing with (i.e. Slate, UVW, WWMT, Convexity, etc.).

The next place to go would be into the basics of modeling using different primitives (geometry), splines, imported objects, etc. With branches into some of the different modifiers that can be employed and some of the draw tools as well. This can obviously take many forms and may even employ smoothing groups, ambient occlusion maps, lofts or whatever aspects that I am currently forgetting.

I think starting at these basics will be a good way to get our feet wet and get used to your instruction and presentation style.

So.

As the thread title indicates I truly feel I am too old for school.
With a life revolving around family, work, church, art, firearms and comatosed states of bliss... how does one find time to go to school? How do you work in something that was easier to do when you had nothing but school to do? How do you adjust a phenomenally busy life so that there is a small window of time that you can slot going to class into? How do you tell the wife and kids that you can’t hang with them because you have to cram for a test? Or complete an assignment before the professor sends out their goons to find you?

Simple.
We all live in the computer age. You just attend online… (Though you do miss out on coeds and beer parties, but then who wants a 30+ year old at a frat party anyway?). There are obvious reasons why this is not the best solution for the young and full of free time crowd, but for those of us who are old and have well-grounded/ established lives that are chock full of responsibility and necessity, it works.

The whole point of this is that I just enrolled and am attending my first class today (1/21/2012). I am going for a Bachelors in Media: Arts and Entertainment: Games (though I am really tempted to aim at movies and such as it is a lifelong dream).
Whichever way I go (games or movies) I will undoubtedly go after a certificate in the other one. I am a bit worried as it has been a very long time since I was in a school setting, even if this one is online. But regardless I feel that it is time to start getting the lead outta my a** and getting to work on something that will give greater opportunity to my family and myself. I feel that school is the best way to achieve this goal, so… here I go.

Wish me luck and keep me in your prayers. I will need both if I am to achieve what I have set before me.

P.S. All of you Math wizards… stick around. I’m going to need you guys on a regular basis. My Idea of math is 2+2 = 22  :o, so you can imagine what will happen when they start putting letter in where only numbers belong. And then there are all of those weird symbols that look more like Dwarven script than math…

Yep, I am doomed. :-\

I guess I should be fair... I can't identify any cars on the road. They are all just cars. :P

That is sooooo true it's scary. There are a lot of things that this guy can't identify, some are simply due to being unable to locate and view it (specific piece of anatomy and the hair he used to have) others are simply beyond his comprehension (good music, books and movies [if it isn't max his capacity to understand drops off rapidly]).

I may get flogged heavily for this but....

I think I like the 1.6 and Hidden layouts better. I think this looks fantastic and all but it just doesn't look like sacrilege anymore. Some maps (Militia 1.6 v. Militia source) need updating and changing to make them worthwhile. Other like the dust maps just needed a nice refinishing. I think sacrilege is a map in need of refinishing only. That is just my personal opinion.

True Story.

I dunno I can commit to a full $15 per session. I may have to take a session here and a session there. But I have experianced your knoedge and would count the price as well below reasonable. I hope more would be willing as it is worth the money and time to ensure that this wonderful tool continues to expand grow and maintain itself. Let me know what happens and worst case I'll sign up and we'll do it one on one and I'll pay for me and that will be better than nothing.

Good luck and keep me posted. ;D

General Discussion / Graphics in news... slightly

US Computer graphics scientist wins Kyoto Prize.

Wow… we sure have a come a long way since Sketchpad. When you compare the simplicity of this Robot Draftsman with 3ds and compare Pong with Assassin’s Creed, you receive an in depth look into the advancement of the past 40-50 years.

Just think if what we might be doing in ten years or better yet what our great grandchildren will be using. The steady increase in technology has been ever growing faster as each year speeds by. We have new O.S’s every couple years, Max is being “updated” yearly, video cards are getting faster and faster with each passing year; our chosen hobby is just expanding at a rate that makes the future of it it unknowable. There is plenty of room for speculation but to know what will be is a daunting thing to contemplate. But oh what fun it is to conjure up ideas of what technological creations wait just around the turn of the big hand of the clock.

Can’t wait to see the future become today.

Not to piggy back/ Hi jack someone else's post but could this be the reason I do not have VMTs for my recently exported model textures?
