General Discussion / Max Discussion/ Impressions/ Thoughts
« on: May 08, 2013, 10:29:11 AM »
So, I just downloaded 3d Studio Max v. 2014. I have used (sparingly and ineffectively) 2010-2013 previously. I have never been able to push Max to its edge, to truly utilize the immense capacity of this powerful program. My competency has never been such that I could build scenes large enough to slow the system down. But, I still notice little things that I like from time to time.
What about you? What version of Max do you use and/ or prefer? Are there tools you miss of wish they would upgrade? Are there tools that they have redesigned that you felt were better in a previous version?  What is your impression of Max as it has grown over the years?
What do you use Max for? Models? Maps/ Game Levels? Effects (particle type systems)?
Do you agree that Maya is an evil program?

This is just some food for thought and a chance to expound on your experiences and to share with others.

Horatiopump vs. Dingo / Pump following the Dingo around again?
« on: February 21, 2013, 02:09:10 PM »
First this excuse for a homo sapiens trys to pick up his mapping skills when he realizes that his better has joined the mapping world. What happens? He attempts a map that could have been fun had it been designed by someone like Brightfeller. But it was designed by Pump so, alas, it wasn't even packed right... sad.

Now, we see him following the great and formidable Dingo again and copying me on my choice of gaming computer boutiques. Four years ago I ordered my first system from these guys and my new system arrives on Tuesday and I hear that Horatio is hoping to make up for his below par skills by purchasing a computer from the same guys.

Well my friend, you can go out and buy a Chey-Tac .308 and it won't help you shoot like Chris Kyle (God rest his soul and bless his family), buying a better computer won't help you build better maps either. Some people have talent other don't. You can tell which is which by who is doing the following!

General Discussion / School? I am toooooo old for School
« on: January 21, 2013, 07:25:17 AM »
So.

As the thread title indicates I truly feel I am too old for school.
With a life revolving around family, work, church, art, firearms and comatosed states of bliss... how does one find time to go to school? How do you work in something that was easier to do when you had nothing but school to do? How do you adjust a phenomenally busy life so that there is a small window of time that you can slot going to class into? How do you tell the wife and kids that you can?t hang with them because you have to cram for a test? Or complete an assignment before the professor sends out their goons to find you?

Simple.
We all live in the computer age. You just attend online? (Though you do miss out on coeds and beer parties, but then who wants a 30+ year old at a frat party anyway?). There are obvious reasons why this is not the best solution for the young and full of free time crowd, but for those of us who are old and have well-grounded/ established lives that are chock full of responsibility and necessity, it works.

The whole point of this is that I just enrolled and am attending my first class today (1/21/2012). I am going for a Bachelors in Media: Arts and Entertainment: Games (though I am really tempted to aim at movies and such as it is a lifelong dream).
Whichever way I go (games or movies) I will undoubtedly go after a certificate in the other one. I am a bit worried as it has been a very long time since I was in a school setting, even if this one is online. But regardless I feel that it is time to start getting the lead outta my a** and getting to work on something that will give greater opportunity to my family and myself. I feel that school is the best way to achieve this goal, so? here I go.

Wish me luck and keep me in your prayers. I will need both if I am to achieve what I have set before me.

P.S. All of you Math wizards? stick around. I?m going to need you guys on a regular basis. My Idea of math is 2+2 = 22  :o, so you can imagine what will happen when they start putting letter in where only numbers belong. And then there are all of those weird symbols that look more like Dwarven script than math?

Yep, I am doomed. :-\

General Discussion / Graphics in news... slightly
« on: November 12, 2012, 05:55:50 AM »
US Computer graphics scientist wins Kyoto Prize.

Wow? we sure have a come a long way since Sketchpad. When you compare the simplicity of this Robot Draftsman with 3ds and compare Pong with Assassin?s Creed, you receive an in depth look into the advancement of the past 40-50 years.

Just think if what we might be doing in ten years or better yet what our great grandchildren will be using. The steady increase in technology has been ever growing faster as each year speeds by. We have new O.S?s every couple years, Max is being ?updated? yearly, video cards are getting faster and faster with each passing year; our chosen hobby is just expanding at a rate that makes the future of it it unknowable. There is plenty of room for speculation but to know what will be is a daunting thing to contemplate. But oh what fun it is to conjure up ideas of what technological creations wait just around the turn of the big hand of the clock.

Can?t wait to see the future become today.

General Discussion / Broken Vids/ Photos
« on: July 17, 2012, 06:15:26 AM »
Any possible way we can delve into this issue? Maybe advise another way of posting them to ensure we can all see each others work? I have taken to posting both the img code and direct link to hopefully assist people in seeing my pics as I post them. If there are other options or a quick fix to the basic problem that would be wonderful.

Thanks.

Model WIPs / Utility Manhole Lid
« on: July 17, 2012, 06:04:05 AM »
The is the lid and neck of a utility manhole access point. I have to add some more skins to it to allow some variety but they will all look like something akin to this:

This is for a specific spot in a map I am working on for holding used nuclear canisters. I designed the original with just brushes inside Hammer some time ago. For the new one I used Max and will be exporting soon with WWMT.

This is the Hammer Version

« on: July 16, 2012, 08:41:10 PM »
Let's go guys, you can't all be working on nothing at the same time. Can you? Nor can you all be as lazy I am. So, let's make a mid year resolution to start posting more examples of what we are working on (levels/ Models/ textures/ particle systems/ etc).

Do you Wall Worm Brothers a solid and leave a reply of what your impression was of their work.

I'll go first:

Stumps of Three. I need to add each design to the other stumps to create three total skins for each.

Source Games & Mods / Perfect Dark Source?
« on: June 27, 2012, 12:13:32 PM »
Anyone know anything about a proposed Perfect Dark Source mod? I saw something online once "coming soon" and have never seen anything else on the topic.
Personally I preferred PD 64 over GE007 64 (which in the wallworm circle is tantamount to heresy), and would love to play it again via source. If you have any information on this Mod I would be greatly interested.

Thanks.

Wall Worm Level Design in 3ds Max / Displacment issue.
« on: June 26, 2012, 07:25:16 AM »
I have tried again here while taking breaks from my new models to work with the Displacement tool. I still have issues with my displacements not always lining up properly. I know it is a snaps issue just not sure which one. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Model WIPs / Concrete Parking Ballard
« on: January 30, 2012, 07:40:46 AM »
This is my first model. I had a lot of help from the Wallworm himself on this. I now its pretty basic but I felt it was a good place to start.
I still have two - three more skins to add before it's complete. Thanks for looking.
